Day 1: ARRIVAL SAN JOSE (20km – 30min)

Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon landing at Juan Santamaría International Airport, our local representative will greet you and assist with your transfer to your hotel in San José. Settle in, unwind in the comfort of your room, and take this time to relax before your adventure begins.

Day 2: SAN JOSE – SARAPIQUI (100km – 2hrs) / CAR HIRE HOTEL DELIVERY

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before checking out. A representative of the rental car company will deliver the vehicle to the hotel. At the designated time, depart for Sarapiquí. Located in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, Sarapiquí is known for its lush rainforests, rich biodiversity, and connection to the Sarapiquí River. This region is a paradise for nature lovers, offering opportunities for birdwatching, river adventures, and cultural encounters in a peaceful, rural setting.

Day 3: SARAPIQUI

Wake up surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy a delicious breakfast at the lodge. Day 4: SARAPIQUI – BOCA TAPADA (50km – 1hr)

After enjoying a fresh breakfast at the lodge, check out and begin your journey toward the remote and enchanting region of Boca Tapada. This hidden gem in northern Costa Rica is home to rich biodiversity, lush rainforests, and peaceful rivers, perfect for those seeking a deeper connection with nature. Your destination is the Boca Tapada Lodge, nestled in a pristine setting surrounded by untouched wilderness. Far from the crowds, this area offers a serene escape where you can unwind, listen to the sounds of the jungle, and perhaps spot toucans, monkeys, or even the elusive great green macaw. 

On the way from Sarapiquí to Boca Tapada, enjoy a delightful stop at a local organic pineapple plantation. Guided by a local expert, you’ll learn about the sustainable and chemical-free methods used to grow one of Costa Rica’s sweetest exports. Walk through the plantation, discover the life cycle of the pineapple, and gain insight into the farm-to-table process, all while surrounded by beautiful rural landscapes. Of course, you’ll also get to taste fresh, sun-ripened pineapple straight from the source. This enriching stop adds a delicious and educational touch to your travel day before continuing to the remote beauty of Boca Tapada.

Day 5: BOCA TAPADA

Wake up to the peaceful sounds of nature and enjoy a delicious breakfast at the lodge. Then, at the agreed time, set off on a memorable river journey through one of northern Costa Rica’s most remote and biodiverse regions. We’ll navigate the majestic San Carlos River, a vital waterway that winds through tropical lowland forest toward the border with Nicaragua. As you travel downstream, keep your eyes open for the rich variety of wildlife that inhabits this region, colorful birds, playful monkeys, sunbathing iguanas, turtles, and the occasional crocodile resting along the banks.

This immersive boat ride offers a unique perspective of the forest from the water and is a chance to experience the quiet beauty of Costa Rica’s northern frontier. Our journey concludes in Boca San Carlos, a small riverside community located where the San Carlos River meets the San Juan River of Nicaragua. This remote village is home to a handful of families who live in harmony with the river and forest. There, we’ll take a short walk through the community to get a glimpse of daily life in this peaceful corner of the country. If you wish, you’ll also enjoy a refreshing natural drink generously offered by the locals, a simple but heartfelt gesture of hospitality.

After taking in the sights and sounds of Boca San Carlos, we’ll make our way back by boat, returning with unforgettable impressions of this off-the-beaten-path experience.

Day 6: BOCA TAPADA – LA FORTUNA (55km – 1hr)

After breakfast surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the forest, it’s time to check out and begin your journey to the Arenal region, one of Costa Rica’s most iconic destinations. As you leave the remote beauty of Boca Tapada behind, enjoy a scenic drive through rural landscapes, cattle farms, and small towns until you arrive at your next destination: Tilajari Hotel Resort, located near La Fortuna. Tilajari is a tranquil hotel surrounded by lush gardens, tropical birds, and views of the majestic Arenal Volcano in the distance. Once checked in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

Relax in the hotel’s pools, walk along the trails, explore the butterfly garden, or simply unwind in a hammock. For the more adventurous, you may also choose to explore the surrounding area on your own or book an optional tour such as hot springs, hanging bridges, or a visit to La Fortuna town. Day 9: LA FORTUNA – RIO CELESTE (75km – 1.5hrs)

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before checking out and continuing your journey toward one of Costa Rica’s most magical natural wonders: Río Celeste. Nestled in the northern region near Tenorio Volcano National Park, the boutique-style Etoile Céleste Hotel will be your peaceful home for the night. Day 10: RIO CELESTE

Then, set out on a self-guided adventure to Tenorio Volcano National Park, home to one of Costa Rica’s most breathtaking natural wonders: Río Celeste. Follow the park’s well-marked trails through lush rainforest, stopping at highlights like the Laguna Azul, Los Teñideros (where the river gets its vibrant blue color), bubbling hot springs, and the iconic Río Celeste Waterfall.

Take your time to soak in the beauty of this magical landscape, where nature’s colors truly come to life. After the hike, you may explore the nearby town of Bijagua or return to the lodge to relax.

Day 11: RIO CELESTE – TAMARINDO (180km – 3.5hrs)

After breakfast in the peaceful rainforest, it’s time to check out and head west toward the sun-soaked North Pacific coast. Your destination: Tamarindo beach, one of Costa Rica’s most vibrant and beloved beach towns. Tamarindo welcomes you with golden beaches, world-class surfing, and a lively coastal atmosphere. Located in the province of Guanacaste, it’s a favorite spot for beach lovers, surfers, and travelers seeking relaxation with a touch of adventure. 

Once you arrive and check in to your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to unwind, stroll along the beach at sunset, or enjoy the many restaurants, shops, and laid-back vibes that make Tamarindo so special.

Day 13: TAMARINDO – SAN JOSE (250km – 4hrs)/CAR DROP-OFF

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time, drive to the Car Rental Office near the Juan Santamaría International Airport to return the vehicle. The car rental Company will take you to the International Terminal to take your flight. Leave with unforgettable memories of Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes, rich wildlife, and warm hospitality.

Comfortable and light clothing is the most suitable for travelling in Costa Rica. Visitors should not wear sleeveless shirts, shorts, short skirts or skimpy clothing when visiting temples, religious or official buildings. Sun protection, sunglasses, a hat and mosquito repellent can be very useful during your stay.
