Amiens is a city and commune in northern France, 120 km north of Paris and 100 km south-west of Lille. Amiens is the capital of the northern French region of Picardy. As well as its own attractions, the city makes a practical base from which to explore the area of the First World War's Western Front located nearby. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Amien’s cathedral The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Amiens, or simply Amiens Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and seat of the Bishop of Amiens. It is situated on a slight ridge overlooking the River Somme in Amiens. It is the 19th largest church in the world. Les Hortillonages The hortillonages “floating gardens” are emblematic of Amiens. You can discover them in special boats known as “barques à cornet”. They are interlaced with 65km of small canals. These market gardens, gently lapped by the Avre and the Somme, have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. Every Saturday, the hortillons (name given to the market gardeners) sell their products at the water market in the Saint-Leu district. The Jules Verne’s cirque It is one of the most important monuments of the city and spectacles to see. The circle was built is 1889 and his name was the Municipal Circle of Amiens still 2003. This circle can receive 3000 people and spectacles of theatre, dance, concerts and sports events are celebrated almost every day.
