Roses

Stay
About the city:Roses is a municipality located on the Costa Brava, in Catalonia, situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses, and is an important fishing port and tourist center. This town in the province of Girona offers a multitude of beaches and coves among rocky cliffs, where visitors can practice a great variety of water sports in the Mediterranean Sea as well as walking in the nearby Aiguamolls de l´Empordá and in the natural parks of Cap de Creu. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Citadel of Roses Located beside the bay of the same name, the citadel of Roses is an imposing military fortification which contains on its interior a succession of the ancient settlements to which Roses was home in the past. The fortress is a Renaissance work dating from the middle of 16th century, which was reformed both for the purpose of extending and reinforcing it in the two subsequent centuries on the orders of King Charles I of Spain. It is a star-shaped pentagonal walled enclosure with triangular bastions reinforced at the points, built using a system of banks, and has two main gateways to the Sea and Land gateways. Cap de Creus Natural Park In the north of the Costa Brava you’ll find the Cap de Creus Natural Park that contains a wild coastline with its vertiginous cliffs and hidden coves, and with islets scattered all along it and a capriciously shaped rocks, sculpted by the wind and the erosion of the sea. It is a biological paradise of forests and meadows that you can explore on endless excursions, stopping off in the peaceful town of Llançà. The City Center Stroll along the narrow, uneven, streets in the center round the church. They all run parallel to the sea and are full of restaurants and small shops where you can enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere. In the Plaça de Catalunya you will find examples of Modernist architecture, like the Casa Mallol, which is the present town Hall. Between Trinitat and Escorxadors streets you will find Plaça de la Pau, which is dedicated to the historical memory of the spanish Civil War. The remodelling of the area, which consists of a sculpture by artist Ció Abellí, was inaugurated in 2006. The sculpture reflects on the irrationality of war and the value of life.

Calella de Palafrugell

About the city:Calella de Palafrugell is one of three coastal towns belonging to the municipality of Palafrugell, province of Girona, Spain, the other two being Llafranc and Tamariu. It is part of the Costa Brava, the coastal region of northeastern Catalonia, in the comarca of Baix Empordà. Calella de Palafrugell is a small holiday resort and fishing village near Palafrugell and a short distance along the coast from Llafranc. It should not be confused with the larger, more commercialised resort of Calella, which is further south towards Barcelona, in the comarca of Maresme. This fishing village located on a rocky coast, consisted in 2009 of 782 inhabitants, most of them elderly people who belong to old fishing families. Calella de Palafrugell has an excellent setting and, whilst busy in the summer season, it does not have the large hotels and mass tourism of other Costa Brava resorts such as Lloret de Mar. The coastline of the town stretches some two kilometres south to the El Golfet beach - part of the Cap Roig headland where beautiful Botanical gardens are located. The town has a number of good standard hotels, apartments and, at a distance from the beach, some campsites. Like much of the picturesque section of the Costa Brava, north of Palamos and south of L'Estartit, Calella has moved steadily upmarket in recent times and offers some very high quality restaurants and hotels - at prices to match. The beaches are Blue Flag standard.

Lloret de Mar

About the city:Lloret de Mar is a resort city on the Costa Brava, northeast of Barcelona. With a deep seaside tradition, today it is one of the largest tourist centers on Girona's sea front. Beaches and coves with clear water combine with an interesting historic center and a wide range of accommodation and leisure. Walking, golf and water sports are some of the possibilities offered by the excellent temperatures of the mediterranean climate. Terraces, bars and restaurants help you to enjoy the Catalan night, making it possible to taste the region's products. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Monument to the Fisherman’s Wife This monument is a bronze sculpture found at the end of Lloret beach erected in 1966 to commemorate Lloret de Mar’s Millennium. It is considered to be one of the town’s most emblematic symbols. Legend states that touching the sculpture’s foot while looking out at the horizon will make your wishes come true. Castle os Sant Joan The castle is situated at the top of the hill which separates the beaches of Lloret de Mar and Fenals anddates back to the beginning of the 11th century, possibly from the age of Lady Sicardis and her sons, the Lords of Lloret, when it controlled the feudal territory of Lloret. The origins of the Castle of Sant Joan are the origins of thetown of Lloret. Santa Clotilde’s garden This wonderful garden was landscaped in a setting of great beauty on top of a cliff with breath-taking views over the sea, and it is a fine specimen of the spirit thatanimated the Noucentista movement in Catalonia - an early twentieth-century movement for intellectual and aesthetic renewal that found a distinguished spokesman in the writer Eugeni d'Ors. The Santa Clotilde gardens were designed in the manner of the dainty yet austere gardens of the Italian Renaissance by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí at the age of twenty-eight.

Girona

About the city:Girona is a one of the biggest towns in Catalonia, enclosed by defensive walls and the Río Onyar. It is located at the north of the region and serves as the capital of the Girona Province, which includes the stunning Costa Brava. This ancient city is medieval and cosmopolitan at the same time, with a well preserved Old Town and full of hip bars and chic shops. The town has an attractive Jewish quarter, an impressive cathedral and several interesting museums. Girona’s cathedral, uphill from the river, can be seen from many points of the city. After walking through the old town you come to a wide stairway leading up to the cathedral. The cathedral has got a beautiful baroque façade and inside it has the widest Gothic nave in Europe. The cathedral is part of the town's historic and archaeological walk which runs along the old town, mostly atop of the city's ancient ramparts. The church of Sant Feliu is the second most important church in Girona, just a few steps away from the Cathedral. This church has a mix between Romanesque and Gothic styles and is dedicated to Saint Feliu, a Catalan saint and martyr. Near the cathedral, we find the Arabic Baths, an imitation of medieval Muslim baths. As a university centre, Girona combines past and vibrant present: art galleries, trendy cafés, and a lively nightlife. It is also a perfect base to explore the surrounding region. It sits just outside of the Pyrenees Mountains and is in close proximity to the beaches of the Costa Brava. It truly is a beautiful part of Catalonia that should be on everyone's itinerary.
